The Pumi is a versatile, energetic Hungarian sheepdog celebrated for its agility and fearless work ethic. Historically developed to gather, drive, and control livestock in the hilly terrain of western Hungary, the breed excels at managing flightier flocks using a combination of vocalization, quick movements, and controlled, close-quarter pressure.
The Pumi’s unique herding style is deeply tied to its regional history. Because Hungarian pastures were often small and situated near cultivated fields, farmers needed a dog that could keep sheep tightly grouped and strictly confined to specific pathways. As a result, the Pumi works exceptionally close to its stock. With a spirited, terrier-like tenacity, they are known to use sharp barking, agile leaping, and an occasional firm nip to command respect from stubborn or unruly ewes without causing injury.
